The Alberta advantage

Earlier, we reported British Columbia New Democrat provincial secretary Gerry Scott would be heading off into the sunset. But who's replacing him? According to our operatives, former Alberta party secretary Laura Nichols - who worked as Carole James's anchor during the recent election campaign - is the winning candidate. Others considered for the posting were former Vision Vancouver campaign manager Ian Reid and party organizer Sandra Houston.

Laura could be good. As long as it's not Ian Reid, the leader of the funky monckeys.

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Ian Reid and that is the last fellow I would want to see as Provincial Secretary. Besides, I certainly hope his CV’s list of successes does not include the Vision Vancouver fiasco. As someone with the pleasure of seeing that titanic through from launch to sinking I think our city will never forgive us. Anyone from Alberta’s NDP would have to be a zealot, heck they're from Alberta. It’s a good choice.

Congratulations to Laura, she'll do an awesome job.

I don't know anything about Laura, but the name Ian Reid rings a bell. In 1993, just days after the NDP lost 17 of its 19 federal seats to Manning's Reformers, Premier Mike Harcourt appointed Ian Reid to a $100,000 per year patronage post, the ostensible purpose of which was to analyse public opinion polls. This just days after the half of the NDP's vote base had walked out on the party in disgust over patronage, Pollard, etc.

So I guess what I saying is about what others have said, anyone by Ian Reid.

Why not Ian Reid? If you're looking for an actual replacement of Gerry Scott, he'd fit the bill.

Laura might be okay. She did a fairly good job anchoring the leaders tour. But can she handle a job like this.

Oh, well. At least it isn't Sandra Houston or another member of the Dosanjh Disaster Gang.

I happen to know all three of these folks and let me tell you, they are all great people.

I have never heard Ian say a nasty word about anyone and have always found him to be considerate, articulate and constructive.

Sandra is bright, classy, politically brilliant and one of the kindest people I know. She has an amazing sense of humour and is perhaps one of the most selfless and generous people on this planet.

Laura is a gem. We are fortunate to have her back in BC. Her committment to people first has earned her huge respect. She also maintains a wonderful attitude and is simply adored by those who work with her. Ask anyone of them....

What a tough choice this must have been. I couldn't have done it due to the rare qualities of the three.

I know this must sound like puffery but it isnt.

I judge folks by their actions and by the way they treat others. Each one of these three are terrific human beings and exactly the kind of people one would want as their friend.

I hope we are lucky enough to have them around for many years to come.

Anyone who remembers Sandra from her days managing Ujjal's take-over of the party wouldn't be so kind.

Funny how the ‘Dippers cry like crazy when Campbell imports Albertan talent but when the shoe is on the other foot….
