Earlier, your humble organ broke the news that Non-Partisan Association board member and former Anna Lilly had been appointed as Mayor Sam Sullivan's director of community affairs. But she's not the only new hire at 453 West 12th Avenue. Effective December 22, Anna Lucarino became Mr. Sullivan's special assistant - responsible for liaising with association caucus members and keeping the mayor's schedule. Of course, it will surprise no one that the 27-year-old Ms. Lucarino also just so happens to be chair of the civic party's youth wing. She also most recently worked for Comptons International Fundraising Ltd., which has raised money for local governments and charities.
Are we surprised? Folks work for folks hoping to get a job. Some folks get the job and then fall flat on their faces. But the winner takes all so all we do is watch to see if his selections are good for the city and not just for the person selected. If they arn't they leave and the guy doing the selecting gets scolded by the voters
No DL you, and everyone else, who doesn't know these two fine gals shouldn't be surprised...both highly competent (Lilly being the more senior of the two, but Lucarino with much respect too across the broad NPA landscape).
Both Annas were part of a group on the Board, who stepped up when the campaign was badly flagging under Greg Wilson and provided stellar leadership (since it wasn't getting any until Hillman and Metcalfe showed up).
To circle the square for you DL: Daniel Fontaine did something neither Meggs nor anyone attached to Lackey Larry did last go around--he found the best talent to fill two challenging spots and the people of this City are infinitely better off for it.
Politicians typically pick partisans, yes, but in this particular case Fontaine did the Mayor, and the citizens of Vancouver, a huge favour by hiring at least these two highly capable, non-partisan people, who will be happy to serve all, with fairness and competence.
Young, intelligent, capable and loyal--those are the 'Annas'
.....and not a broomstick in sight, oops, sorry Lynne, hope I didn't disturb you out there in the dewy pasture.....
Thanks for letting us know these women were on "The Board" If that was the NPA "Board how then can you say there non-partisan people.and explaining how the NPA landscape is broad.
Yes some folks who get elected often bring on people they know. I did suggest if they screw up, SS will carry the heat.
Most folks who end up with fairly high paying positions should at lease enter a competition. That doesn't mean, we worked for the board, you won, so we work for you. Forget the broomstick bit. The next few years in Vancouver politics will be interesting. One hopes the new broom doesn't shut down a bunch of social housing to accomodate the non partisan folks.
