Earlier today, Public Eye regular Budd Campbell noted federal Conservative candidate Phil Eidsvik was among those who attend the British Columbia New Democrat's $100 per plate Celeberation 2005 fundraising dinner. Which begs this question, why was Mr. Eidsvik - who was most recently executive director of the British Columbia Fisheries Survival Coalition and is now running in Newton-North Delta - at the event? In an interview with your humble organ, the candidate explained, "I don't think that everything the New Democrats do is wrong. And I'm probably closer to the New Democrats then I am to the Liberals. And I have some friends in the New Democrat party who asked me to come. And I said, of course I'd go. If you look around the fishing fleet, you'll see fishermen in every party." He later elaborated on that answer in an email which we have, in part, posted below.

Sean:
With respect to lobbying NDP members, I think the fund-raiser was my first NDP fundraiser. The event was billed as a time for the NDP to meet people in business. Though I was a Reform/Canadian Alliance/Conservative since 1993 and I disagree on many policy matters and general philosophy of the NDP, I also agree with certain NDP policies or certain aspects of a particular policy. For example, though I share NDP concerns about open-pen fish farms, I have yet to review their solution to the problem. I am also pleased that the NDP caucus on the federal Parliamentary Fish Committee supported an all-party recommendation to cancel the separate commercial fishery for the Musqueam/Tsawwassen on the Fraser River. I also like certain of the NDP candidates on a personal basis and have many fishing friends from all parties including the NDP. Does this mean I think the NDP should be the federal government? Of course not.
Regards
Phil
Ok, now I've heard everything!
Mr Phil Eidsvik I am a member of the conservative riding association and I will never vote for you!
If you're so close to the NDP then why don't you run for them instead of pulling your strings and getting the riding handed to you!
I'm finished with the riding until the next election. I don't need some guy who doesn't know the meaning of loyalty and can't figure out which party he belongs to.
That's a little partisan there Newton North Delta. Different parties need to recognize and maintain that there should at least be a possibility to work together. Without such cooperation, the Liberal government wouldn't have fallen and you'd have lost your chance to vote until April next year anyway.
Eidsvik has said he doesn't want the NDP in government and that should be clear enough. Reform/Alliance used to be able to siphon off a lot of NDP votes in BC so it's no surprise there's someone like Eidsvik in the gang. With any luck, he can appeal to NDP voters in his riding to make up for his losses of not having the right skin color.
Does anyone actually believe "Newton North Delta" is a Conservative member? Give me a break - claiming to be a member of a party then extolling faux outrage at a non-event is one of the oldest tricks in the book.
As for the topic at hand, all you have to do to see that this is a non-story is re-read the very question Sean poses: "why was Mr. Eidsvik - who was most recently executive director of the British Columbia Fisheries Survival Coalition and is now running in Newton-North Delta - at the event?"
Gee what would the head of an organization like the BC Fisheries Survival Coalition be doing at a political event? It's not like his job involves lobbying members of different political parties or something.
What a snoozer.
Isn't Mr. Eidsvik the guy that said hang the Canadian flag upside down... questioning loyalty will come up.
It looks like my recognizing Mr Eidsvik at the dinner was more noteworthy than I thought!
It's probably a good practice in terms of reducing the polarization and tension in BC politics for people to attend "rival" party's dinners. For example, PublicEye reported that both Glen Clark and Jim Sinclair were at at David Emerson Liberal dinner earlier this year.
Buddly!
Don't flatter yourself. Must have been another slow day for our faithful scribe Senor Holman.
Eidsvik, by virtue of his job, has to (should!)go to all the dinners, regardless of party affiliation.
Newton is a nutbar. Who cares about the NDP dinner? The time has come for the Tories and NDP to try and work together, while the Sliperals rest on their hard burned money for a awhile.
Lousy menu at the NDP function anyway, I'm sure.....
It was a convention dinner--a very different dinner than a regular fundraising dinner.
And smilin' Jack was there for kicks as well.
All you Tories can delude yourself into thinking this was ok, but in your hearts (black as they might be) you are sick that he was there financially supporting the federal NDP.
And make no mistake, that's where the dough went. And when the Island and interior Tory seats go NDP, you can thank Phil for funding the party.
