The Terminal City two-step

Last Sunday, The Province's Ian Bailey reported the federal Conservatives had two prospective nomination candidates in Newton-North Delta "one of whom stepped aside to clear the way for the acclaimed candidate - Phil Eidsvik" - this, according to national campaign co-chair John Reynolds. And who was this mystery candidate, you may wonder? We can't say for sure. But, in an interview last week, Jesse Johl told your humble organ, "It is true I handed in my (nomination) papers. And it is true I was the first person to hand them in well before the deadline." The former Vancouver-Kingsway candidate declined to comment on whether he stepped aside for Mr. Eidsvik. And now one of our readers is reporting Mr. Johl "has filed a complaint with the party." And our operatives confirm party headquarters shipped Mr. Johl an appeal package on Thursday. For that appeal to go forward for review by the party secretariat, those papers must be signed by at least 10 Conservative members.

The CPC runs a serious risk of significant protests over Phil Eidsvik's nomination.
I think the protests would be justified. The Cummins / Eidsvik position is the denial of title and constitutional enshrined rights. In contrast, a country should not deny the benefits of solemn contracts because Cummins and team don’t like the fact that those contracts are with a minority.

The participation of Eidsvik and Cummins in protests against treaty / title rights sets up something both the NDP and the Liberals can attack. Given that BC is currently a three-way race - a virtual three way dead heat - finding candidates that will generate aboriginal protesters on the streets does not suggest the CPC has learned much about community relations… or contract law.

The Tories never liked having to deal with the Indo Canadians in Surrey. Remember that the whole original purpose of the Reform Party was to stop all of this immigration from other countries (as well as stopping those Quebeckers). Eidsvik is the Reform candidate. I would expect that he will come a distant third, now that they have shut out the community.

The idiots in the Tory crowsnest pull moves like this and I wonder how the hell they intend on getting elected.

The bastards from the Reform days should just ship off. Immigration under the Liberals was ridiculous, yes, but there are ways of communicating to people that convicted rapists and thugs form others countries don't belong here, any more than we should keep them here if all they have done during there years is commit to the same or similar activity.

In thus particular case, though, the Tories are looking like they want to marginalize the Indo-Canadian community, who in Surrey, are, largely, very good people and shoudl have the right to have memebrs of the their community stand fro us, and if successful, should expect our support no less than if they were alabaster skinned.

How ridiculous!

And leave it to a whiner like Jesse Johl to make a huge deal of it. While running to be a candidate for the NPA in Vancouver, he was more useless than tits on a bull: rarely returning phone calls, showing up late to meetings, rarely having one innovative or captivating idea. Nice guy, but stands on his handsome looks more than anything. Not much substance otherwise. Pity.

Eugene, just because of you, I'll work this campaign. Oh, and the North Delta part of the riding was a strong part of John Cummins' old riding and the racist and illegal restricted fishing policy was a big part of his wins.

And you know, a lot of new Canadians in the area think it is discrimination to be declared second class citizens by those who arrived in Canada prior to them, even when it was a few thousand years prior.

George (Pringle I presume?),

I agree with you that Cummins’ protest against honouring aboriginal contract rights does attract votes from some corners. However, the point the rest of the country has made in response is that they don’t support Cummins’ philosophical and legal assumptions.

As you know, Reform was labeled racist because they could not justify why it is that contracts are voided because those contrasts are with aboriginals. George, can you explain why constitutional contracts should be voided because they are with aboriginals?

"The Cummins / Eidsvik position is the denial of title and constitutional enshrined rights"

- Just because they are constitutional doesn't mean they are right. America's constitution used to permit slavery, was it right?

Giving natives a race-based fishery is a racist policy. That Reform fought it on racist grounds doesn't make them any better than the policy though.

Somebody should research the native fishery issue.Eidsvik/Cummins have never said they are opposed to aboriginal right to food fish. The native only commercial fishery is not a legal right but only a liberal goverment policy.DFO stopped claiming it was an aboriginal right around 1996.The canadian supreme court in 'vanderpeet'[1996] confirmed the sto'lo have no aboriginal right to sell food fish. Using the racist bomb when you have no idea what your talking about tell's us all we care to know about you

BC Voter,

You have just equated native rights to meaning white slavery. Others have asked why should natives have their contracted rights? Doing so, you are demonstrating why minorities, and most Canadians, will not vote for reformists.

The formation of Canada and it provinces and territories was based on establishing treaties and boundaries in exchange for rights and relationships. Simply stated, rights were traded for other rights and consideration. Those contracted arrangements mean Canadians receive benefits and pay compensation for those benefits. Today, we honour treaty rights with many peoples, such as the US, the Commonwealth, aboriginals etc. The obligation to honour contracted rights when benefits are still being experienced from those contracts is the normal course of contract relationships.

And yet, above we see that because aboriginals are involved, reformists argue those contracted rights should be voided. Many argue that when contracted terms are selectedly voided based on race that is racism.

Four 400 years the argument, that whites should not have to pay for the benefits of agreements with aboriginals, has been used. How is today’s version of it any different in affect, assumption, and intent?

As a member of this riding, I want a run off between the Johal guy and Edsvick the one the party acclaimed.

After reading the Vancouver Sun and listening to some things being said in my riding this guy is going to be doing a suicide run.

Edsvick is far to right wing and is losing support fast, what the heck was the party thinking.

Can someone tell me what the heck the riding was thinking and why they didn’t fight to have a true nomination?

For reasons I don't fully understand, Phil Eidsvik was at a $100 a plate Saturday Nite dinner at last month's BC NDP Convention. I tried to post this earlier, but the comments feature was in the shop.

I fear that "Eugene Parks" knows nothing about the Aboriginal Fishing Strategey, its initiation by the Mulroney Conservatives, or its legal repudiation by various Supreme Court rulings. As difficult as it is for this very anti Reform/CCRAP/Alliance/Whatever They Are Calling Themselves This Week person to admit, it is a racially based policy, acting to the detriment of non-Aboriginal fishers, Aboriginal commercial fishers and Aboriginal groups in the upper reaches of the Fraser River system.

Lorne,

Your post above is a statement of position and not an arguemnt based on facts.

You are right though, aboriginal title often does include fishing rights. However, the concept of title is not racial, it is based on the concept of contract and treaty. *You* make it racial by claiming a contract with a "minority" makes the contract's status racial.

I wonder why you don't see Canada's contracts with the Europeon countries as race based.... hmmmm

Isn't "tits on a bull" a bit overly generous for Johl.

Handsome is too for that arrogant, out of shape bastard.

He's just desperate to get elected.

And hey, Newton North Delta, trust me - Johl is way far right too, he's just too stupid.

Incidentally, Johl's entire campaign last time was "I grew up in Kingsway; I love Kingsway; Kingsway is my home and I want to represent it."

So WTF is up with Newton North Delta? Did he grow up there too?

Too bad. His brother was an Olympic wrestler, bright and a nice guy. He'd make a good candidate.
