Yesterday, British Columbia New Democrat organizer Ryan Stewart sent out an email urging party members to volunteer for Vision Vancouver and the Coalition of Progressive Electors - in part, because the Non-Partsian Association has "close ties to Stephen Harper's Tories." One wonders then what he will think when socialist icon Harry Rankin's widow Connie Fogal-Rankin comes out endorses the association's mayoral candidate Sam Sullivan? According to our operatives, she's just one of several "non-traditional" supporters who will be showing up at an afternoon press conference to give Mr. Sullivan their thumbs up. The following is a copy of the media advisory for that conference.

Looks like Jim Green is on the ropes. Two reasons:
1. Ryan Stewart is flailing about like a fish out of water sending emails far and wide, trying to motivate a base that SHOULD have already long ago been motivated
2. Sam sullivan is drawing support from a wide cross-section of supporters, where Jim Green is just getting the usual suspects
Bosca. Looks like Sam Sullivan is going to reduce VV to bantha poodoo.
Yeah right - Connie Fogal Rankin and Jamie Lee Hamilton are going to deliver Slammin' Sammy Sullivan the election!
How many more nutbars does Sam need before he qualifies as honorary far-left loony toon?
And is this how Stephen Harper's BC boss and Sullivan key advisor Colin Metcalfe is balancing off the Torycentric tendencies in Sam's campaign?
Ummm, you guys have Ryan Stewart on your team...
People who live in nutbar left loony tune glass houses shouldn't throw nutbar left loony tune stones.
All this shows is that the freaks are all lining up behind Sam Sullivan. As I said the other day when I heard Green was campaigning with Moe Sihota, the freaks are nowhere to be found and are being pushed over to Sullivan. The campaign with the most freaks is the losing campaign. In this case, things look good for Jim Green.
This just proves that there really is only One Loony Left....and his name is Sam Sullivan.
Agreed.
Especially now that Sullivan has been endorsed by the Georgia Strait. If there ever were a sure sign of loony-dom, that would be it!
What this tells me is that Jim Green and his former Glen Clark NDP back room spin doctors have obviously
alienated their so called friends on the left more than many on the left want to admit - In driving around Vancouver you don't see many Cope/Vision signs together - perhaps many in Cope are going to vote Sullivan for mayor and their five candidates for council.
Constance Fogal-Rankin is no nut bar - she has waged a continuing battle against an expansion of gambling - something lost to many of Green's supporters. Bernie Simpson, Tom Parrry, Darlene Marzari(?) all moderate NDP'ers supporting Sam tells me that he is not a right wing but a practical middle of the road politican who will put his city first not the defeat of the Campbell Liberals in Victoria.
Not only did Connie Fogal Rankin come out in support of Sam so did Ann Livingston of the Green party. So did founder of Crab park, Don Larsen as did a Sex Trade Advocate. These people represent the Heart of the Downtown Eastside Support Jim Green would need to win the Mayoralty. He doesn't have it. Sure he has developers Peter Wall, Ian Gillespie, Luxury Condo Marketing rep, Bob Rennie and Casino Gambling interests but most of these people don't live in Vancouver.
Sam Sullivan has collected a wide diversity of support as former Mayor Mike Harcourt did. This is what will send Sam Sullivan to Victory on Nov 19.
All Jim Green has is Canwest. Ironic isn't it!
Yes Jamie Lee..it's ironic that a right leaning press giant like Canwest would back anybody but the right wing's chosen..Sam Sullivan. The only conclusion one can draw from this is that Jim Green is the best choice.
I'm one of the more vocal critics of Canwest but I've always admitted that they are very shrewd in the way they have manipulated the political scene here. They have always skewed to the right of center so for them to back a left of center guy like Jim speaks volumes about Green being a far superior choice for mayor.
Some call it a wide range of diversity, others call it variety grab-bag of mixed nuts. Kind of like a trail mix. Which you would eat while banging on the bongos in a park on commercial drive.
My freak barometer is never wrong. Sullivan is being sandbagged with them and Green is going to take it!
Canwest might be right wing, but I'll put money on the Sun backing Green. For no other reason than the tens of thousands in full-page ads Bob Rennie's bought for him.
Sure, Rennie's a hero now. Soon all of those high-rise condos will start to leak, just like the low-rise ones did and for the same reasons (low-bid contractors cutting corners on methods and materials, building codes down-graded by pols who sold out to the housing industry, etc.). Who will be cheering for Rennie when hundreds of condo-dwellers walk away from those 5%-down CMHC mortgages on worthless properties? He and the builders will be long gone. Maybe they can bring Dave Barrett back to whitewash this mess too.
I'm told the sour grapes harvest this year will produce an excellent vintage. A very fruity whine with a hint of crushed expectations.
So Connie will or has endorsed Sam. It just proves Sammy can collect loons as well.
EXTRA! EXTRA! The Province newspaper endorses Jim Green.
Excerpt of todays editorial:
"[W]hat Vancouver really needs now is the best leader to build on the progress that has been made over the past three years.
That, in our view, is Jim Green, who has shown an uncanny ability of late to bring people together on a number of issues and projects."
And here all along I thought that Can West was a right wing rag - this is indeed a funny race - you have NDP'ers endorsing Sullivan and right wing businessmen types endorsing Green.
so the early bird 'thinks' they catch the worm
Very damn few NDP supporters are backing Sullivan and not all business types are necessarily right wing but those that are, and choose to back Green are smart enough to recognise a strong leader..someone who has accomplished much here as opposed to Sam who, outside of his pet projects/charities, has accomplished sweet FA.
Calling Jim Green a leader is hysterical. Wet/Sleeps whatever the hell you call yourself, wake up. Jim Green is no leader. Larry Campbell, love or hate him, led. Philip Owen led. Harcourt and Campbell both led.
Green is no leader.
Sadly, neither is Sam Sullivan.
This is potentially the worst Mayoralty race in Vancouver history and the city will be the worse for it on November 20--no matter which one of these really poor candidates wins.
If we just went by what we read in the press I'd have to say you were right. I read the Staight's take on it yesterday and have to say that was the most pessimistic endorsement/hack job I've ever seen. Most of the article slams slammin' Sammy as a very poor choice for mayor then ends up giving him the nod. Their take on Jim was equally gloomy.
What I found interesting was that they neglected to mention the very newsworthy fact of who SS's campaign backer/supporters were. It was a decidedly purposeful omission as I'm sure Straight readers would be repulsed by this information. When I say 'Straight readers' I'm not referring to sexual preference or all those right wing pervs who look at the classifieds..I'm talking about those who read the political writing.
It would seem that there is a lot more than meets the eye in the editorial choice made..definitely a hidden agenda was at play here.
Canwest is certainly not behind Sam Sullivan. All of their unionized reporter lackeys have been writing glowing articles about Jim Green. This explains why The Province endorsed Jim Green today.
Frances Bula from the Sun topped the cake by publishing that Jim Green thinks of himself as "I think I'm kind of Buddha-like or saintly." Jabba-The-Hut-like and/or Saint Lucifer indeed!
Jim Green will be the best mayor this city has ever seen. Go Jim!
Wet,
Dude. Chill already on your Sullivan "campaign backer/supporters" junk. Get a grip. He's being backed and supported by Libs, Cons and Dippers. It should come as no surprise that he has a good chunk of Conservative support. You expect them to back Green? They'd back Mike Harcourt over Green!
Con
Can't kid a kidder..I know you'd like us all to believe that the misery is spread evenly over at the NPA but the fact is that there is only a teeny smattering of lib and ndp support behind Sam. His big guns are the types that would have looked good in SS or Gestapo uniforms in another era...the types who today would be fitting out designer torture chambers next to the wine cellar because US public opinion has decided it's in vogue.
The smart money is on Jim Green because he is decisive and positive not all negative and flippy floppy.
Republicanwetdream: you've pulled out the same pathetic Nazi card that Jim Green did. Get a life.
The truth is that a very diverse group of Conservatives, Liberals, New Democrats, Greens, and Independents are backing Sam Sullivan... whereas Jim Green is a puppet for solely the NDP.
Gosh the NPA guy should be really pleased having Fogel and J.L.Hamilton. wow what powerful people.
The other side of the Rankin family(Harry, now deceased) was a person who we all respected for his years of service. he was a voice to consider. Harry let us know what you think. and be quick about it.

If it walks like a duck then I give it both barrels and no amount of 'ducking' the obvious is going to change the fact that some of Sam's key people would have fallen all over themselves to nosh with the little corporal at the Eagles Nest had they been living in the Germany of the 1930's.
In the 1930's Canada and the US were crawling with anti semetic, racist hatemongers who would have flocked to Hitler's side given the opportunity and today that same inbred sentiment resides in the hearts of people who would deny others equal rights...those are the facts sonny...you can deny them all you like..I'm just calling a spade a f**kin shovel. There are still lot's of those people around and it is undeniably obvious they have found comfort in fundamental christianity, the Republican Party and the Conservative Party of Canada.
"Sure, Rennie's a hero now. Soon all of those high-rise condos will start to leak, ..."

Steve, ... have you passed these warnings on to your Liberals in Victoria and Ottawa? Just wondered.
Republicanwetdream,
I suggest you take a look at this week's Jewish Independent, highlighting support for Mr. Sullivan, and consider an apology to the people you have just viciously slurred. You obvioulsy find comfort hiding behind a handle in cyberspace.
Republicanwetdream: The only people talking like Nazis are you and Jim Green.
Jim Green's "Third Reich" remarks netted him a story on Public Eye Online a few weeks ago. Warren Kinsella roasted Jim Green over his Adolf Hitler remarks.
Are you borrowing Jim's brown shirt?
For the record, a young Tory named Margaret Thatcher was campaigning against the rise of the Nazis in Germany, while the socialist Labour politicans were defending Hitler.
History proves that socialists and national socialists share common values.
Thank you Ryan..you've just helped make my point. That tory Thatcher is part of the Bush/Reagan cabal that are making fascists from the 1930's and 40's look like amateurs. Whether they are undermining democracy in the third world or selling off public assets at home to enrich their supporters at the expense of the working man, these right wing, neocon imperialists are no better than Hitler...they just have the sanitized image that modern mass media propaganda has given them. Their genocide, whether by tobacco technology, bio technology, depleted uranium or by countless other insidious means, also far exceedes the carnage caused by Hitler's rabid anti semetism.
The fact remains that some of Sam Sullivan's key back room people and running mates have some nasty baggage..no amount of misplaced outrage at my observations can change that.

The unspoken truth that must weigh heavily on many Jewish people in the Western world is the fact that the Israeli government has aligned itself with a fascist, criminal regime like the Bush administration. I can understand their dilemma..talk about being between a rock and a hard place.
Reality Check: Right wing parties in North America are ideologically aligned and that means they support Uncle Sam's imperialist agenda..the same agenda that has cost many millions their lives..all so the USA can
- have unfettered access to oil
- sell their weapons
- sell their junk food, junk medicine etc. etc.
- make their brand of christianity the dominant world religion
- control everything and everybody
The stench of these atrocities clings to Sam Sullivan...wasn't he listening when his momma told him he would be known by the company he keeps?
Republicanwebdream: Thanks for proving my point. By disagreeing with Thatcher protesting the Nazis in Germany, you expose yourself as akin to the socialists propping up Adolf Hitler. You therefore are condoning the murder of millions of innocent Jews, Slavs, Roma, homosexuals, and disabled persons. Shame on you and your racist beliefs.
Reread my post Ryan..at no point did I agree or disagree with your statement that Thatcher protested the rise of Hitler.
I will agree that it is typical of right wingers to shoot their mouths off when they don't know what they're talking about.
Wet:
Americans and their "junk" medicine, eh? Like chemotherapy, MRIs, CAT-scans, and antibiotics?
What a f*&king moron!
Further, it is indisputable that the Communist Parties of Canada and the US, not to mention many others on the Left, supported Hitler's regime up until he took a swipe at Papa Joe with Operation Barbarossa. Stalin then, via his tool the Comintern, ordered his lackeys here to change their tune, which they did, of course.
What a glorious history! Are you proud of your side's ideological forebears?
One more thing, Wet:
I almost forgot to gloat about Sam Sullivan's victory yesterday!!
What are you going to do now that your secondment to Jim Green's campaign staff from the Union of Library Workers is rescinded? Go back to being an angry, underachieved book-sorter?
Gee Satan's little bitch
You've got enough of a hate on fuelled by braindead propaganda to start your very own far right party.
Sam is not officially mayor yet and even if he does assume the post..it may not last long. One thing is for sure..he will be forever tarred with a tainted victory.
You sound like Joe McCarthy..another jumped up Republican failure until he got his 15 minutes by "exposing" "communists". His legacy is still one of great shame.
Sleeps:
Shame, eh? No shame on the part of Soviet apologists and sympathizers, like your ilk!
Since you bring up McCarthy in response to my post:
Once the KGB opened up their files, it became apparent that yes, indeed, the Communist Parties of North America served as very active recruiting grounds for Soviet spies, contrary to what people like you and Hollywood want us to believe.
Braindead propaganda? Really! What, the part about Hitler & Stalin being good buds, supported by Communist parties the world over? Operation Barbarossa? Control of world communist parties by the Comintern and thus Stalin? Mao's murderous rampages? The Khmer Rouge? Just a figment of the Right's imagination?
Don't think so....it's history! Oh, I forgot, you people don't believe there's such a thing as objective history.
