Looks like paid British Columbia New Democrat organizer Ryan Stewart has his fingers buried deep in the civic election pie. Writing from his work email address but identifying himself as being from the "COPE/Vision Vancouver Election Day Campaign," Mr. Stewart notifies Vancouver Dippers the two civic parties are running a "joint" get-out-the-vote operation to ensure "we beat the NPA and return a progressive majority to City Hall." And why might that be important, you may ask? Well, according to Mr. Stewart, the Non-Partisan Association has "close ties to Stephen Harper's Tories" and - wait for it - "anti-gay and anti-choice activists who do not share our values." The following is a complete copy of that email, which was leaked to Public Eye.

Subject: Help Elect a Progressive City Council
Dear Vancouver New Democrat:
A progressive city council in Vancouver is on its way to victory, but the
election is too close to call.
The NPA has close ties to Stephen Harper's Tories and anti-gay and
anti-choice activists who do not share our values. To support their
regressive platform, the NPA is spending over a million dollars on this
election.
We know that we cannot out-spend the NPA. Our strength and the way to
success for working people has always been through mobilizing our
supporters. We can beat the NPA and return a progressive majority to City
Hall, but only if every one of our supporters gets out to vote.
To help make that happen, COPE and Vision Vancouver are working together on
a joint election day campaign, and we need many more volunteers!
This Saturday, November 19, we will be going door to door to make sure we
get our supporters out to vote. Volunteers are needed from 7:30am until
8:00pm.
Give us a call today at 604-628-4841 or e-mail us at
electionday2005@yahoo.ca
Please:
- Provide us with your contact information. Ideally we’d like both an e-mail
address and a phone number.
- Be specific about the hours you are available.
- Advise if you have a vehicle.
Please help us keep Vancouver moving forward! On November 19 we need to
return a progressive majority to City Hall!
Sincerely,
COPE/Vision Vancouver Election Day Campaign

This is just typical of Ryan Stewart and the funcky crowd. They don't really have any issues to run on so they trot out the anti-gay anti-choice songsheet. (As if council can ban gay marriage or abortion.)
Ironically, their Vision Vancouver has no vision. And as usual for this useless bunch of "organizers" their support is a mile wide and about a millimetre thick. Hence the sesperation tactics. I smell victory... for Sam Sullivan!
"(As if council can ban gay marriage or abortion.)"
Are you certain that they couldn't have an impact? What about zoning for clinics?
And what kind of tone might the council set? Public pronouncements are known to be part of the political process and part of a voters legitimate choice criteria.
Conspicuously, you don't directly deny that some NPA candidates are anti-choice and anti-gay marriage. Was that just an ommission, or an admission that the charge is basically accurate?
What I really love about the secular left is that propaganda has stopped and bullshit has taken it's place, long ago. For a group that detests the likes of Dubya and the Republicans, boy they sure employ the same tactics....tell a tale long enough and loud enough and it will resonate.
Well, it's worked. From the beginning, starting in the fall of last year, Larry Campbell, aided and abetted by the sorry assed likes of the next Mayor, Jabba the Hut, have consistently misrepresented about almost every "accomplishement" and have used the left leaning underpinnings of scribblings of the Jeff Lee's and Allen Garr's of the world to secure the NPA's fate. Misrepresent the NPA, twist the truth and bank on the incompetence of their feeble campaign management and leadership to carry the day. And that, ladies and germs, is what will win Saturday. Sadly, the NPA are doomed.
But to those would be bathwater drinkers, alas, the truth: if the NPA is so anti-gay, why was it the first party in this City's history to run openly gay candidates and showcase them--not cause they were gay, but because they were qualified? (Price, Herbert, Wilson etc.) Why is the office staff and research team presently running the NPA show (into the ground!) heavily populated with openly gay folks? All this BS started with a delusional and jilted Alan Herbert smearing Ronald Leung and we haven't been able to look back.
Ryan Stewart is a political hack like any other. This tale becomes the truth because it has to.
The NPA will deserve their fate on Saturday, as they did nothing to cover their candidates asses, instead forgiving the Greg Wilsons and Lynne Kennedys of the world for their incredible political incompetence and ineptitude. Talk about being tolerant!!!!!! The two biggest useless DIVAS in the campaign and neither a candidate!!!
Poor Mr. Stewart has confused Saturday with a federal erection, since being gay or having an abortion are not issues for civic elections.
Perhaps being the diligent lad that he is, he's just looking past the win he will help steer on Saturday, to the federal election, where the the NDP will stall (as always) at the usual 20% Canadian stupidity ceiling.
e dominus, e spiritus, e santos...
RIP, NPA, 'til next time......
How is this any different from BC Liberal fans and supporters trying to drum up an equivalent GOTV drive for their pet party, the NPA? All that happened here is this fella got his email exposed, while NPA-Liberal's have done a slightly better job at keeping things like this under wraps. As for the gay/choice issue, those are wedge issues that the rightwing uses too. Its exactly how the Republicans motivate their hardline evangelical voters to swamp the polling stations.
There's nothing new about this tactic, and the real story here is that there isn't a story.
Budd, cut the crap.
You are infuriating me with you're transparently faux sincerity. Stop it, or I may have to "un-like" you.
Stewarts email is bullshit, pain and simple. I agree with White boy, except that Slammin' Sammy won't do it. (If he does it, it will be by a hair and because the NPA have a first class E-Day Chair that they imported form the Libranos).
Moving abortion clincs and rezoning issues? Get a life you old fart. There isn't one, NOT ONE, whackjob extremist anti-abortion candidate on the NPA slate--a well known fact to everyone except pussies like you that need to spin and pretend to ask the "pertinent" questions.
More lies form the left...will we ever hear any truth form you?
You've been smoking too much of your name.....
ROTFLMAO :-)
Jeez, it's weird how the bigots can spin bigotry and then blame their opponents for being wrong, bad, evil, un-Socred ... Jumpin' Jesus, is this de-mockracy?
No, it's de-monckracy!
The VV campaign is such a crappy campaign, you'd almost think that David Perry had something to do with it...
And, given Ryan Stewart's penchant for spazzing out every time his name gets in print, it's only a matter of time before he writes in here.
T minus ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one...
Pie, you trot the word bigot out like Ellen Woodsworth. Put it back in your trap and save it for Saltspring.
I love the part about the NPA not sharing our values.
But the black hair-dying, tattoo-collecting, body-piercing latte-drinking, baba ghanouj-eating, bongo-playing cheque-collecting COPE activists, they share our values... right?
Don't blame Ryan. Most likely, he was told to send out that email from his boss and love connection Nikki Hill.
Chantilly Lace you got a bloated face
And a curly tail, hanging down...
actually, there's nothing inaccurate in what ryan said, and there's nothing wrong with trying to go to people who share the views of vv/cope to ask them to help out. this is a pointless entry - unless the point is to show that ryan is doing a good job on the campaign.
I just love elections...the closer you get to E day the loonies start multiplying and even stranger..Dagmar is making good sense..provided he manages to keep his pet peeves/intolerance in check.
You can't beat politics for weirdness. Dagmar and I don't see eye to eye on many issues but we share similar respect for at least two BC political figures who have not fared well in the popular press.
Wow. This is a great moment. Is this a reconcilliation? Were we ever conciled to begin with?
All's I know is I love you man!
(I was afraid of this)peace brother...here have some tabouli. I was just about to light up my bong...I'll save you a hit and later when you hear that funky bongo beat in the wee hours..it's dedicated to you.
Sorry, I can't smoke pot. I'm a recovering pot addict and am in a program. This program also involves making amends, but the amends I made with you are genuine, rest assured.
Ever since I've been banned from Rabble, I've felt like I've been orphaned. Now, with great friends like you, I've finally found a new home. Public Eye.
I've been banned from Rabble three times and was the first person banned from the Tyee twice...we've got more in common than I thought.
Wow. It's tough being banned from Rabble so my sympathies to you. I was banned by Rabble three times and I've got to tell you, it was one of the worst weeks of my life.
Excuse me, Once Again, but I am dead serious.
When you have people who are committed on "values" items, like abortion and {anti-}gay rights, and they are elected to public office, they are going to do whatever it takes to find a way to put their beliefs into practice.
If you don't believe me, please explain to us all what public business has been conducted over the past several years by the Surrey School Board. You're damn right these people can find a way to put their feelings into practice! They've proven it!
Even if they don't try anything concrete, using the "bully pulpit" to express sentiments that are out of step with society's needs can be a real irritant to the general public, and it can become a political issue. Consider the case of former BC Premier Bill Vander Zalm, elected on a popular wave in 1986, and within two or three years facing the Canadian equivalent of impeachment proceedings. Why? Because he couldn't stop saying foolish things that tended to mix religion and politics. Once again, note the telling point that Vander Zalm never got around to actually DOING anything about abortion, ... but just talking about it was enough to cost him the Premiership. And his party its existence!
Case closed. These items DO matter, Once Again, and I think the problem here is that once again we're drawing down towards the weekend and you're in need of some libations and concubations in order to restore you to good humour. And common sense as well.
Best regards at the JA on Sat nite, ... BUDD!
BTW, ... Gord Robson will NOT be elected in Maple Ridge, ... DDoug McCallun will defy predictions and prevail in Surrey, ... in Burnaby, Derrick "Saab 960" Corrigan is in for a fight he may not win, and in Prince George Dan Rogers will wipe the floor with Liberal sycophant Colin Kinsley. In Vancouver, Jim Green by a nose, as construction trades and firefighters prevail narrowly over the Georgia Straight readership.
Not too many Straight regulars will vote NPA as these folks are more politically astute than the average consumer of mass media. There's not much that's hip and relevent in the NPA choices.
There are some strange things going on at the Straight...must be some personal history involved.
"We cannot out-spend the NPA.." Why bother, when all sorts of unions can second their staff to work on the election campaigns of your friends? And not count that as election spending.
I guess they think we're pretty stupid. And yes, Wet, I know you'll agree with them.
Yes satan..I think your're stupid..just as stupid as Sam and his supporters who thought they could get away with putting a business failure like James Green into the race as a credible candidate.
Stayed tuned..the fat lady hasn't sung yet.
Sleeps:
I think you should READ some of the books you sort everyday down at the library...and not just the ones by Chomsky, Moore & Mao.
