Retiring former cabinet minister Lord David of Anderson received one final wave today at Victoria's Golden City Restaurant, where the Victoria MP was bid (a much anticipated) adieu by local fellow travellers and elected representatives, past and present. According to our operatives, British Columbia federal Liberal president Jamie "The Incredible Shrinking" Elmhirst showed off his svelt new figure as the event's master of ceremonies. Other noteworthy attendees included former Victoria-Hillside backbencher Sheila Orr, the riding's sitting New Democrat MLA Rob Fleming, provincial Liberal caucus executive director Jeff Bray, Victoria federal New Democrat candidate Denise Savoie and her Grit competitor David Mulroney.
Ooohhh. You forgot Carole James.
Tell us more!
Anything funny? What did Lord Anderson say?
He used to be a pretty good rower. and his work around double hulled ships was good as well. Sort of went down hill way back when he was going to sue the government for losing a patronage job, when Lying Brian took over the reigns of government.
His work to keep off the coast drilling away from the gready hands of the New Era gang made it all worthwhile and for that let's say. Thanks David, we may never have voted for you but that means a lot to many BC citizens
But the guy put in his time so let's just let him go peacefully into the good night. He did his best and you can't ask for more than that.
In years past, but not so long past that I cannot clearly remember them, I was furious with David Anderson for his hardball treatment of Glen Clark. Very cheap politics.
But DL is right. Anderson put in his time, and then some, first elected in Esquimalt Saanich in, wait for it, ... 1968. Yes, 1968. I am not sure how large a place Anderson will eventually have in BC history, but his keen interest in outdoors and environmental issues will tend to make him a more pivotal player than what a surface examination of his resume would otherwise dictate.
Here's a plan. When Carole James becomes BC's Premier, she can amalgamate the Capital Region and put Anderson in charge for three of four years as sole trustee while some commission is studying a more permanent governance model. Then Anderson could be the Czar who tackled Victoria's disgraceful sewage treatment habits.
Budd - Anderson actually supports the disposal of raw sewage in Victoria. He is an environmentalist, but he actually fights for what he believes in, not just what is politically sexy.
I laughed my ass off when Lorne Phipps got up on the stage to thank David Anderson. Its pretty pathetic to see that guy taking credit for the club, when everyone knows that since he became president in September, the UVIC Young Liberals have been run into the ground. Nice job there Lorne!
I'm sure Jack's stellar Young Liberal record is so profound that he would gladly measure it up to Lorne - a guy who delivered during Paul Martin's leadership bid, organized youth for several conventions, recruited dozens of new youth members into the party, raised thousands of dollars and did great work during the 2004 election.
Indeed, Jack's stellar Young Liberal record is so amazing that he hides behind pseudonyms to attack Lorne because he is frightened of the guy. Good job Jack. You really hit a home run there.
I have to agree with Other (even though he or she also used a pseudonym). Ive been involved with the Young Liberals for some time, and even though things are not always perfect, Lorne has been an upstanding guy who has delivered for the club many times over, as well as for the party. Show the guy a little respect for giving up so much of his time for something he believes in!
Jamie is on the high stress, low carb diet thanks to his business partners in crime
Well put Mark. Somebody has finally started to look into the web of lies spun by the infamous Erik Bornman aka Spiderman, and his partner in crime Brian Kieran.
Yeah, must be tough for Jamie working with Brian K. Almost as tough as running orr's campaign last year. But his "shrinking" has nothing to do with that... newly single, he had to shed pounds to attract a new woman. Money's on her being some political up-and-comer looking for an "in" to Ottawa!
Christ! Tough crowd. All I did was start going to the gym.
Insert obligatory HIV reference here.
If anyone wanted proof that Jamie and Brian are the same old "Basi boy" monkeys of the past, you need do nothing more than visit pilothouse.ca Interesting... and comedic.
Adam, you must be in the midst of a paranoid delusional fantasy. I don't think Jamie and Brian are in any way shape or form connected to the "Basi boy" monkeys of the past.

Well I'll be damned. I thought Anderson was fairly close to the Sierra Legal Defence Fund, and I know they are extremely critical of Victoria's raw sewage dumping. But to be truthful, I have not actually heard Anderson on this subject, ... so maybe you're right! A shocker though.
Well, Richard Stanwick's the CRD's chief health guy, and he says that we have bigger things to worry about and more important places to allocate money...I tend to believe him more than a politician who has to be an expert on everything...perhaps that's where Anderson's coming from too?
As for these comments being posted, I find it rather amusing how any thread can turn into a forum for federal Young Liberals to bicker and natter amongst each other.
Is there any thread nic DOESN't make an uneducated ass of himself in? Besides his and Josh's HIV post, the rest of the comments are interesting.
The Young Libs have done better on campus in this area more recently. For a while, it was pathetic. Recently, I have seen hope for the future of the party. Sadly, most of the young Libs around here still support Campbell and his regime without realizing they are actually supporting Provincial Conservative Party under the red banner.
It sort of goes to show that people will support a party pathologically, by name, but not principles. It was sort of like when the NDP chose Ujjal as their leader. But then again, many NDP'ers recognized at the time he wasn't an NDP'er and they switched temporarily.
So it could sort of be said that the NDP members are better able to recognize when their party has actually become another party entirely.
Kudos to Cambell for building the Libs. Too bad he had to turn it into the Conservative Party of BC to do it.
Call me when the BC Libs become Libs again.
I guess I went a little off topic.
Anderson was okay. I voted for him lots. Could have been more effective. Could have been less effective, too. Like Sheila Orr, Provincially.
Hey! Everone else thought the HIV post was funny.

Even 40 years ago Greater Victoria's sewage system was an issue. Should Victoria be treating its sewage prior to pumping it into the ocean, and into an inland sea at that?
If the CRD's chief health bureaucrat is arguing the case that his employer is not completely out of line after all, despite what everyone else on the planet says, ... well, ... just how completely astounding is that?
Cities like Edmonton and Calgary who have to dispose in fresh water, in rivers that others will use, don't have this option, so obviously they're a little peeved whem someone else puts their feet up and says, "We're going on the cheap, because we can get away with it! Nah-nah-nah-nah!" In addition, even American coastal towns who have the same at-sea options, those in Puget Sound for example, regard this practice as totally substandard and completely retrograde.
What Stanwick has said is that the money being talked about for sewage treatment could make a bigger impact on improving health in the region if it was spent in other ways. I'm not a medical expert like I guess you are Budd, so I tend to agree with him.
Why would he say the money could be better spent in other ways if he didn't believe that? And if your arguement that he's supporting his employers position was to actually hold any water (pardon the pun), then wouldn't he say "we don't need an increase in our budget equal to what's being talked about for sewage outfall for anything in the CRD"? I'm pretty sure that's not what he's saying.
Stanwick is looking at the issue using the wrong lens.
It is an environmental issue much more than a health issue.
"What Stanwick has said is that the money being talked about for sewage treatment could make a bigger impact on improving health in the region if it was spent in other ways."
That may be so, and it may not be entirely relevant. Even if there is a higher benefit/cost ratio in other projects, at least from a public health perspective, there may be some absolute requirement for expenditures in this area. For example, it may be that crime prevention of small crimes is most effectively achieved by having more officers patrolling the streets on bikes. But that doesn't mean that one can reduce the number of experienced detectives doing homicide work.
Budd, when you say, "That may be so, and it may not be entirely relevant. Even if there is a higher benefit/cost ratio in other projects, at least from a public health perspective, there may be some absolute requirement for expenditures in this area," are you suggesting that we should be spending healthcare dollars in places where Dr. Stanwick says could be better spent - and that he would like to be spent - elsewhere? I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree, but if he says money can be better spent elsewhere in the health spectrum, then I take him at his word and feel that of all our government officials, it should be his call. Isn't that his job?
Hmm. Interesting stuff, Jordan. Got anything more???
