A councillor's guide to lobbying city hall

Earlier, Public Eye reported Reputations Corp., which has a number of staffers helping out the Non-Partisan Association, previously worked for Wal-Mart Canada Corp. Astute readers may remember that company was blocked by city council back in June from setting up shop in Vancouver. According to Wal-Mart's public affairs director Andrew Pelletier, the mega-chain plans on revisiting that development proposal following the election. And when that happens, the chain and Reputations (if they are again involved with that proposal) might want to read this entry from the councillor Peter Ladner's blog: "Wal-Mart missed the boat by not mobilizing the majority ethnic communities of south Vancouver. These are people who for some reason were under-represented at community visioning processes, public hearings and letter-writing campaigns to council. They are also very important communities for Canadian Tire and Wal-Mart, and most likely to be more focused on the merits of the applications than whether Sam Walton contributed to George Bush's campaign. Members of the Punjabi Market were in favour of the two stores, expecting increased business from the dreaded increase in local traffic." Mr. Ladner, whose campaign manager Allen Langdon joined Reputations Corp. back in July, was one of three council members who voted in favour of Wal-Mart's development proposal.

And to think that some people are real sorry to hear that a man of Mister Ladner's stature is not running for Mayor this year!

Firstly, Langdon is a consultant, and NOT a WalMart official, never has been, never will be. Ladner's vote in support of WalMart was well before Langdon became his manager.

Secondly, where's the issue here? Ladner made a perfectly good statement about how silly folks over at WalMart/First Pro, didn't bank on nutbar philosphe's hijacking council to talk about Dubya, rather than the real issue: the absolute suitability of the very green proposal for the Marine Drive store. So, they should have goine out and buttressed their proposal with the local ethnic support, as the only thing that translates to the left is votes so they can continue to screw this City silly.

What a bunch of jokers. SleepwithAngles was right...thanks to Greg Wilson and the small group of nutters who screwed the NPA campaign from the beginning, there's no way Mike HIllman can turn it around.

COPE/VV: 7-3, with Green as Mayor.

The only good that will come of this will be that just like after Meathead Harcourt and the others played around with the City and killed much good, the NPA resurgence was felt for well over a decade after wards.

Don't worry commies, the red menace will die be next election...

Know who's gonna kill it: all of you, like always.

Once Again, I take it that you're pretty familiar with Langdon. Well, maybe you could ask him why WalMart treats Vancouver with some respect, coming up with a green design, but in suburban municipalities and in the smaller centres on the Island and the Interior they waltz in with take or leave it, kiss my ass kind of attitude.

Oh no! Not scavengers! Not where the creme de la creme live!

Yeah Snizzle, the cream de la cream. Good one. It's hard enough to live in the neighbourhood and then to add to it...maybe some of us enjoy having people rummage through our garbage cans, I don't know.

But I do know what a shame it would be if it were located in West Point Grey, wouldn't it?

Good eye, Sean!

Now do you suppose he would just have to deliver a vote when the proposal comes back to City Hall, or would he also have to round up busloads of public supporters for the public meetings to make it all look nice & kosher?

Budd,

Yes, I agree with you that those who intimidate any public servant, elected or otherwise, are commiting to reprehensible acts. I do indeed know Langdon and he is a very forthright fellow with good political instincts.

However, the unusual drubbing he is receiving for simply working for a company that consulted for another company that consulted for WalMart, is really a stretch.....but Sean has to hate him, since Greg Wilson does.....

This is all part of the plan: see, Greg Wilson has been marginalized enough at NPA HQ and is having a much tougher time leaking very inside stuff to his pal Sean...so they release a little steam by going after Langdon, whom they both hate (for marginally related, but connected reasons). Langdon, along with a majority of NPA campaign gurus, where highly, and correctly, critical of Wilson's hiring almost from the beginning. This is all about a political vendetta.

This story line regarding the NPA and WalMart started with Mr. Holman's huge frothy leap in logic in thinking that he was outing Langdon for consulting for a consulting group who was consulting for a group that consulted to WalMart. That's precisely how far a field this is. No matter, so when Sean saw my comments and some others, he had to find a way to legitimize the incredible stretch (more like stench) he'd created, so he attached Peter Ladner to this, who hired Langdon both well after his vote for WalMart, and after Langdon's new firm (he was formerly with GPC Public Affairs)had already been consulting for WalMart for some time before. NOte: Langdon has NEVER been anywhere in the vicinity of the WalMart file. Langdon and Ladner know each other well for some time and the suggestion that they got it together cause of WalMart is utterly contemptible horse shit.

This story is a result of a personal axe-to-grind by Holman against Langdon. I am very disappointed in Sean for this, as disappointed as I would be if he went after Ian Reid for consulting for Edgewater Casino. Like Sleepswithangels, I think the potential here with Sean is huge, but when he gets bogged down with gossipy crap like this, which means nothing, it takes him back to the beginning. As I mentioned in the original stream, Langdon is in no more a conflict here than Ian Reid is for doing work for the casinos.

If this is happening to an NPA candidate's campaign manager, manager's who are mostly on the campaign periphery thanks to Wilson, wait for it, Sean will get the call from Greggy and then all hell will break lose with some wandering attack on higher ups in the NPA who would not excuse Wilson's ineptitude or incompetence.

Problem for them is: do they do the nasty and take it to the next level and live with the consequences.....stupid is as stupid does.....we'll see...

Once Again,

Isn't "gossipy crap" what this site is all about? Let's remember, this site probably has between 40 and 80 readers, all of which (and that includes me) are either insiders or whack jobs. You'll note how very few of the "gossipy crap" actually makes it into the general political discourse. "We" are not the general public (and much thanks for that).

Snizzler,

This site, often, is about some pretty great reportage, and, admittedly, some of the gossip is accurate. Sean is a good writer and researcher. But sometimes......

The gossip fuelled by a personal animus or bias is not helpful and only serves to put out a story that is, in the end, total bunk.

The Langdon/WalMart story is a classic example. An otherwise good guy is smeared without all the information forwarded (unless it was provided by yours truly). Sean knew that any consulting that Hartrick did was well before LAngdon's arrival at GPC, so why smear Langdon? So what if he's campaign boss for Ladner? Ladner already voted in support of WalMart PRIOR to Langdon's actively joining the Ladner team. These are key pieces of the greater puzzle which were omitted, I argue, with intent. I know someone in the NPA who spoke to Sean and made these items clearly known to him. I also know Greg Wilson and Sean are tighterthanthis and that 99% of the leaks that came from the NPA campaign came from through him--some very damaging and untrue. Throw into the mix that they both dislike Langdon, on a personal level, and you know what you have?

Gossipy crap.

Print the real story. Why cast aspertions upon people, without all the facts out there for the insiders and informed nutters to make a decision with?

At the end of the day what do you have in this world? Your integrity, a little or a lot, that's all you've got, and the uncalled for attack on Langdon got sooooo desperate, they even dragged Ladner into it--another favorite target of Wilson, because Peter calls Greg on his incessant campaign crapfest all the time.

Spare me the excuses Snizzle Bizzle, this site is supposed to be a prefessional proposition, and for the most part, it can be.

Maybe you should change your name to snivel bizzle...

It has been pointed out to me by one of my very, very (did I mention very) lovely assistants, that I misstated above how Langdon and Hartrick are at GPC, when in fact Langdon left GPC Public Affairs to join celebrated PR guru Hartick at Reputations.

Apologies to those easily confused, like nubile lovelies, who understandably have lost concentration from 'overwork'.....
