Claim jumping

Independent mayoral candidate James Green was the target of at least five small claims suits prior to 2000. This, according to a court record search conducted by your humble organ. During background interviews, the aggrieved parties we were able to contact say Mr. Green paid up on those claims. When asked for an explanation, Mr. Green initially said those suits were filed 15 years ago "and I can't say I remember anything like that...pratically anybody I know who does business in (the entertainment) industry has someone who's sued them. It's a very sueable industry" because of its volatility and the amount of money involved. In an interview yesterday, Mr. Green - who said he was experiencing serious health problems at the time of those suits - also claimed he was being targetted by a smear campaign. And he said those suits had nothing to do with him but rather the previous owner of a company he had purchased for $1 sometime in the mid-90s.

Another court record also shows Mr. Green filed what he refers to as a payment proposal for his debtors back in March 2000. According to that proposal, at the time he had $283,542.80 in outstanding debts. The largest amounts owing were $137,2000 to Delta resident Marilyn Hartley and $97,689.63 to the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency. Mr. Green is still carrying debts with both parties according to his nomination papers. Yesterday, The Tyee published a report in which celebrity chef James Barber takes a shot at Mr. Green, who says he was instrumental in the success of the Urban Peasant cooking show. A version of this article was originally published in today's edition of 24 hours.

Being just a humble citizen I figure I could remember if I got sued for the amounts shown in your article, even if it was 15 years ago. Obviously the guy figured most folks would forget.
Customs never forgets, and one wonders why Customs were after him for over 97,000. And this guy is trying to run to have some folks mix up his name with the eventual new mayor of Vancouver. The real guy and next mayor Jim Green.

I don't see why. The real Jim Green has an even longer litigation history.

I saw James Green shopping in Safeway yesterday. He looked calm and relaxed. I don't think any of this negative press is getting to him.

Hey guy - would you like to list all of Jim Green's litigation history for us - would like all the goods before I decide where to cast my vote in the election.

It's a good idea to have all the facts. Try google as I don't think 'guy' was doing more than blowing smoke.
My perception is that Sam has actually done little to distinguish himself at city hall. When the NPA were in power during Sam's first 9 years he was all but invisible. Check it out.
As for Jim..he has been a news maker for decades because he has been actively working for the community and has been involved with dozens of projects.
There is a world of difference between the accomplishments of these two.

Sam would be better off focusing his talents on advocating for the disabled..the only place he has success.

Guy can do his own google to answer my question and friends of democracy writes an awkful lot like sleeps with the angels.

Other than the downtown eastside what has Jim Green done for the rest of the communities in the city and more importantly how much of his own money has he used to finance all these projects.

I've been told that swa has angel trouble..and is seeking to alter his rotation accordingly. He's eyeing the calender and making the necessary adjustments.

How many successful community activists "use their own money" to finance projects to benefit the community? I'm sure I don't have to try and convince many people that given the DTES is home to the most serious problems in the city..without the tireless efforts of Jim Green, the whole city would have suffered.

Making life easier for the wealthy may play to right wing interests but it does not make you a great mayor.

Despite the laughable poll that the NPA did..most voters know that Jim Green is the MAN.
Sam will have to take his "Santa Claus to junkies" act on the road for a few years and fine tune it before he has another crack at city hall.

I recall a curious comment the darker-hued James Green made during a public spat a few weeks back, to the effect that "anyone who looks at me can see I'm descended from slaves." Erm, no, that's a flat-out wrong assumption to make of blacks actually, in Vancouver. Just a reflexive bit of Yankoid political posturing, really. And then, astonishingly, the very-white Jim Green riposted with some hasty bilge about his pride in his non-slave-owning sharecropper heritage, etc... Jesus Christ, what a pile of bullshit. I think both Jim Greens ought to move to Canada. Hear it's nice in Vancouver.
