Pumping up Corner Gas

Today, The Globe and Mail's Ottawa Notebook column featured Canadian sitcom Corner Gas as a hot selection on its hot and not list. The reason: "During a discussion about protection of Canadian culture with the editorial board of the Wall Street Journal this week in New York, the Prime Minister launched into a dissertation about Corner Gas. He called it the 'funniest show in Canada' and urged the board members to lead the charge to bring it to the U.S. Later, he confessed that he had ulterior motives, given that he has appeared on the show." Pity the column's writer didn't disclose the Globe might have an ulterior motive for promoting the sitcom in its pages. Corner Gas is broadcast on CTV, the television network operated by the newspaper's owner Bell Globemedia Inc.

Corner Gas is sort of funny( I wached past of one segment once) but it sure isn't the best thing on TV in the humour department and now Mr. Dithers has got his folks sorting out the soon to be finished CBC strike there will be more to compare (C.Gas with)If it means anything, my brother in law from the kingdom of Alberta says all the folks her knows in Saskatchewan actually watch it and think its pretty funny. and he knows a lot of folks in Saskatchewan. I would suggest that a great number of folks know who owns the TV stations.
Now its so heavily endorsed by the PM I guess we are duty bound to observe the show.
Watching the provicial liberals falling over them selves would be much funnier if they wern't hurting so many people with their blundering ways.

Corner Gas is hilarious, and it's TV ratings and DVD sales figures show that it's earned the right to be promoted in that manner, regardless of which newspaper owns the show, etc.

I've seen Canwest shows applauded in the Globe, and a lot of great feature stories on shows like Corner Gas in the CanWest papers. This is not a case of shameless promotion because it's owned by the same company. Did you notice that BCTV talked about the Canucks just as much before and after the separation from the Arthur Grifthis empire?

Corner Gas is funny, Trailer Parks Boys is funnier, while Family Guy is funnier still (but not Canadian)

Mike G likes Peter G

Quelle surprise...I like it too though I suspect for the exact opposite reasons Mike G does.
Family Guy is hillarious. It's bigotry, misogyny and homophobia resonate most with those who can relate to the main character's shortcomings.

I suspect I find Family Guy twice as funny as sleepswithangels does as I find the way this show pokes fun at both the authoritarian right and the sanctimonious left equally hilarious.

Whereas I am sure sleepswithfishes sees nothing funny about poking fun at the left.

au contraire mg

The left is a source of humour for me as well..all those flakey hippy/commie jokes..what's not so funny though is the fact that when right wingers run governments people suffer and die so the rich can become richer. All the stats back that up..the ratio of wealth to poverty in the world keeps rising in favour of the rich. Conservatives are fond of saying that a healthy economy will allow governments to spend more on social programs..in reality that never happens.

Remember how right wing press kept singing Michael Wilson's praises while he was Mulroney's Finance Minister?
Despite all the hype..the deficit kept going up.
I guess when your're stealing so much in the form of kickbacks and untendered lowball deals for mothballed assets it's kind of hard to balance the books.

I'll just bet you see lots of that Mike..shall I have Stevie Cameron call you for an exclusive...she likes a good laugh too.

Um have you not noticed that Mike Geoghegan is a federal Liberal not a federal Conservative, yeesh you guys are stupid.

Posted by Traci on October 12, 2005 07:00 PM

um traci

Have you noticed that many Libs, both the BC and federal variety, are actually either small 'c' conservatives or more typically, in the local variety, neocons?
They call themselves Liberals because they noticed that voters seem to consistantly mark their x in that box, not because they are real liberals.

Corner Gas is retarded. It's that "preserve the Canadian image" bullshit with a dumb show filled with a bunch of die-hard loser washed up Canadian actors. (The good actors go to the States since they have talent, and Hollywood pays a lot more.) God! When will that one that plays the old grumpy guy DIE FFS!!! If these retarded Canadian networks think that THAT is the real Canadian image, then I'm leaving this country yesterday. I used to run a gas station and we had funny shit happen all the time in a small rural Alberta town. That was just everyday life. Yet, it was 100 times hilarious than this forced trash. I am patriotic. Of course, I want to see Canadian TV. We are a country full of intellectuals... so WHERE ARE THE DAMN GOOD SHOWS???

So in short, despite what you think, just because this show has some loser Canadian actors (that just won't die or give it up already)... do ya really want Brent BUTT *sigh* as your Canadian image. I don't. I REALLY REALLY DON'T!!!
