Hog Town heroes

By now, most Public Eye readers are acquainted with the backroomers who will be managing the Non-Partisan Association and Vision Vancouver's election campaigns: namely, Greg Wilson and Ian Reid But who will be running the Coalition of Progressive Electors election operations? Come on down Sean Hill, executive assistant to Toronto city councillor Joe Mihevc! Mr. Hill most recently managed provincial New Democrat candidate Mel Leham's unsuccessful run in Vancouver-Point Grey against Premier Gordon Campbell. And, according to our operatives, he also has managed a number of urban elections in Ontario for progressive candidates.

Word on the street is that Greg Wilson is out and Mike Hillman is now the manager.

Apparently the candidates can't stand him. Seems to be the feeling of most people who have worked with him. How does someone who is so universally reviled continue to get hired?

Posted by Keen Observer on September 29, 2005 10:35 AM

I see Bob Rennie paid for Sam Sullivan's full-page ads in the Vancouver Sun the day before the NPA nomination.

Is that the same Bob Rennie who is bankrolling Vision Vancouver?

We decided to support Jim Green in order to stop Christy Clark. With Christy out of the race, why shouldn't we revisit this decision?

Jim Green/Sam Sullivan/Christy Clark: all of them in the back pocket of developers.

Who is going to stand up for the people?

Keen Observer, you old fox you.

Greg Wilson is no longer "managing" the NPA campaign. Mike Hillman is. After months of offending candidates, destroying goodwill among the board of directors, playing fast and loose with rules, and generally being a out of control DIVA, the Sullivan campaign, put it's foot down and turfed any and all power from this almost completely useless employee. Greg Wilson's good at counting how many cookies should be on a particular plate for NPA meetings, but beyond that he is a venomous individual, who would have never got this job if he hadn't delivered the presidency to Paul Barbeau in the spring of 2004.

Not suprisingly, our "humble organ", Mr. Holman didn't cover this story, as his pal Greg Wilson can't have a negative story come out on his buddy Sean's blog! Where do you thikn all the NPA leaks came from?

Now maybe the NPA will have a chance at putting together a decent campaign provided Mike Hillman maximizes the DIVA control switch.

Now, if Halloween would come just a little earlier, they could offer Lynne Kennedy a broom to fly away on.....

Good riddance!

So, I guess Sam's people do recognize that Christy put on quite a campaign if they are taking Christy's campaign manager. My question is: who really was David and who was Goliath?

Because when I watched all of those council candidates slathering on stage for Sam when the victory was announced, it was quite clear that Sam was the one with the NPA machine. An NPA machine that was just about taken over by an outsider with only 10 days to recruit.

Good that they now recognize the talent.

Even if they couldn't stomach the smell of curry or people who didn't live in Kerrisdale.

Hillman joining the NPA campaign team as director? Yes.

Wilson staying put in his current role of manager? Yes.

NPA campaign team stronger? Yes.

Bad news for Green and his communistas? Oh God Yes!

Ladies and Gentlemen, put your hands together for Mayor Sam Sullivan.

KO
In the world of right wing politics it's always who you know and who you blow.

CS
Relax..if you are concerned about the 'people' you have to ask yourself who has worked tirelessly for the most disadvantaged..Jim Green.

TI
Having personally been a beneficiary of a GW leaked document I must respectfully say how troubled I am to hear of such rancor within the house of NPA. Now, regrettfully, I must go off and snicker and chuckle all day long.

Check out this pic (http://www.urbanvancouver.com/node/2269) from the DiVision Vancouver press conference. Why isn't anyone smiling? Reminds me of the old shots of Politburo members at the May Day parades in the Kremlin.

Uh yeah...

Anyway, I met Hill on Lehan's campaign and I can tell you that he seems pretty good. He made a decent show of a bad situation, and got a good atmostphere going. My only worry is that he's an out of towner, and that he'll rely on less 'professional' people this time around with the left split.

I am confused about Bob Rennie. I read in the Vancouver Sun today that he is the money behind the Vancouver Sun ads. But I also know that he is the chief bagman for Jim Green.

Who is yanking whose chain?

Is Bob Rennie hedging his bets?

Or did he fund Sam because he really wants Jim Green, and was scared shitless of Christy Clark, like most of the Jim Green folks were?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Posted by confused on September 29, 2005 03:45 PM

confused--

Perhaps has something to do with getting to know Wards (not Cleavers)?

Posted by RossK on September 29, 2005 05:57 PM

Why is everyone confused about Mike Hillman and Christy's nomination taking over the campaign? Sam's team was mostly from outside Vancouver and provided by the same crowd that took over Conservative Party nominations for radical social conservatives.

Methinks that this all comes down to Kevin Falcon.

what crap!

Where do they come from?

Colin Metcalfe
Hamish Marshall
Joel from Abbotsford
et al ex paid Conservative Party organizers

Posted by Another Insider on September 29, 2005 08:44 PM

These valid observations strengthen my prediction that CC/MM will start attending fundaMENTAL churches to prep for their new gig as tory saviours...poised to lead to flock to pork barrel heaven..out there poling the electorate...one redneck hump at at time.

Posted by sleepswithangels on September 29, 2005 09:48 PM

Great. Except Colin, Hamish and Joel come from the old PC, rather than raving lunatic fundamentalist reform side of the party.

Posted by threep on September 30, 2005 01:03 PM

cc and mm would never attend fundamentalist churches. they are LIBERALS. You know, the kind of people that simpletons with rigid ideology HATE. That's why Jim Green was frothing at the mouth about cc. That's why Colin Metcalfe -- even though he and his wife used to be friends with CC and MM -- was frothing at the mouth about cc.

Simpletons from the left and right always hate Liberals the most.

the truth about libs

there are so many variations of Liberals, liberals and LIBERALS

you have socreds who call themselves Liberals because they had nowhere else to go

you have federal liberals who adopt rightwing policies in a desperate attempt to cling to power

then you have LIBERALS who have no idea what they really stand for but enjoy being on the bandwagon of a perennial winner

Posted by sleepswithangels on September 30, 2005 07:01 PM

As opposed to Sleep, who prefers being on the bandwagon of perennial losers.

Posted by Steve Hopkins on September 30, 2005 10:38 PM

Once I actually lived in Joe Mihevc's riding. Actually down the street from me. Ran a pretty solid campaign crushing various opponents, or well, beating them. Go COPE.

"you have federal liberals who adopt rightwing policies in a desperate attempt to cling to power" - funny I thought that the federal liberals were in bed with Jack Layton and the NDP - money for child care - cities - etc

Posted by politics101 on October 1, 2005 07:24 AM

101

Pay attention now..this is really basic..fedlibs will crawl into bed with anyone who will allow them to hang onto power. Given that there is a really scary bunch of racist, uncle sam loving rednecks breathing down their necks..they can be forgiven their political promiscuity..and, if you hadn't noticed, they have also adopted some rightwing fiscal policies to appease those voters who swing both ways.

steve

give it up lad..you are embarrassing yourself.

Posted by sleepswithangels on October 1, 2005 12:11 PM

It will be interesting to see who the Social democrats in Germany crawl into bed with to maintain power but i presume that will be okay because they are a progressive party.

Praise from Caesar.

steve
I do appreciate your literary/poetic nature
You should nurture that..it might lead to a political epithany..you might just forsake the nazi way

pee101
bed hopping German style in 2005 is a delight I can recommend...no matter what your political bent
however, if you have a progessive POV, your choices are infinitely tastier

Posted by sleepswithangels on October 1, 2005 06:17 PM

You probably meant to spell it "epiphany", in the sense of a sudden manifestation of the essence or meaning of a thing (deriving, as we all know, from the Greek epiphaneia or manifestation, which itself comes from epiphainesthai, the verb "to appear"). We may disagree, but I would never stoop to childish tantrums or insults, you short, overweight, balding, near-sighted, middle-aged socialist son-of-a-bitch.

Posted by Steve Hopkins on October 1, 2005 10:23 PM

steve

you need practice..lots of practice
you should also loosen up a little
stooping to insults based on physical appearance and other limitations only betrays your self loathing
flaming nazi whackjobs is an acquired skillset
there are few rules but many subtle restraints

and too bad steve...I cycle 100k's/wk, do the 'Grind' and kickbox
I'm well into my fifties--ya got 1
sob-- ok 2

"I cycle 100k's/wk, do the 'Grind'

So What - so do i and many other people as well.

Posted by politics101 on October 2, 2005 07:33 AM

OK freshman 101...listen up

It would be a good idea for you to read other peoples posts before you say "so what".

Read Steve's rant directed at me and my response to Steve. Your're gunning for an 'F' mister...at this rate you'll be a freshman forever.

Posted by sleepswithangels on October 2, 2005 10:23 AM

Irony. From the Greek eironeia or pretended ignorance. An essential element of a healthy sense of redneck nazi whackjob humour. Nicht wahr, Schlafen mit Engelen?

Posted by Steve Hopkins on October 2, 2005 11:32 AM

Steve

No thanks...I don't have sex with male nazis.
