If at first you don't succeed

Also making news at David Emerson's fundraiser: roast hoast David Haggard, who is rumoured to have told a number of attendees he would be running as a federal Liberal candidate in the next election. But it won't be in New Westminster-Coquitlam, the constituency where he came in third during the 2004 campaign. Instead, Mr. Haggard, the former president of the Industrial, Wood and Allied Workers Union, will be taking on Nina Grewal in Fleetwood-Port Kells.

What?? Noone has commented on this? This is massive news. You have to like that sly old Haggard is slipping over to Fleetwood-Port Kells - though he'll lose there too, likely in third again.

This is a figment of Mr. Haggard's imagination. Surrey has plenty of strong local candidates for this and the work in Surrey is that Fleetwood Port Kells resident and former MLA and Cabinet Minister Brenda Locke is going to be the candidate.

We don't need an outsider running in Surrey.

If Haggard does run in Surrey his candidacy will be an acid test of the journalistic standards of the mass media, including CanWest, and especially the intensely pro-Liberal CBC. At least, prior to the Lockout that is, ... one of the big imponderables in terms of who has the advantage going into the next Federal Election is how this long labour dispute is going to affect the political attitudes and loyalties of CBC reporters and editors.

The key personality to watch in that regard is Terry Milewski. Throughout last year's campaign Terry was effectively the publicity chair of the Dosanjh campaign, including softball interviews on national TV asking Dosanjh to explain to the viewers at home just how great a hero he was twenty years ago when Sihk militants tried to murder him. No tough questions on the decision to switch parties, which was rather more recent.

More recently he has come to Dosanjh's side in the Grewal tapes episode, again taking the Dosanjh party line, complete with authoritative sounding interviews with contributors to Grewal's campaign who all just happen to be supporters of the Liberal Party or Dosanjh personally. This is presented to credulous CBC watchers as if it were actual news material. If Terry was doing stories on cars he could do things quite easily, just ask the Ford dealer to write the story on the new Chev.

Another acid test? Why hasn't Bill Cunningham's Federal Salary and new office digs at Library Square been reported on by any of the media???
