Your humble organ has spilled much ink covering the provincial New Democrat's affiliation report - a document whose contents have so far remained undisclosed to the prying eyes of the public. But, according to operatives familiar with the report, the committee has recommended allowing affiliated province-wide unions (as opposed to locals) to sent two delegates each to convention. Presently, those unions can send two delegates for the first 160 members of their union and one delegate for every 800 members after that. Changing that formula would considerably reduce the influence of the labour movement within the party and at convention.

Not far enough, but a good start in returning the NDP to 'The People's Party' status.
While I agree that we must sever attachments to unions,it must still be acknowledged that the NDP is a labour party. To completeley disallow working class organizations a voice in politics is dangerous and plays directly into the hand of the current corporatization of politics. Allowing for the constant demonization of unions and their legitimate voice is one sided and disingenous. Union members are valid, caring and important aspects of our society and their concerns, issues and voices still deserve a vehicle within the political process. Let us modernize our relationship but let us also remember if you kill the roots the plant will die.
Personally I think it would be better if the NDP did not provide any convention delegate positions to affiliated unions or other affiliated organizations if there are any.
I think a linkage between the NDP and organized labour is valuable, but it should be accomplished by assigning some ex-officio positions on the Provincial Council and the Provincial Executive to officials of organized labour bodies who are also individual members of the party. Similarly, professional associations representing teachers and professors, doctors, dentists, lawyers, engineers, accountants, forester, agriculturalists and a few others should be represented in some similar fashion. Again, the individual taking that ex-officio seat would have to be an individual member of the party.
Any news about the drug laundering machine in BC that helped the Liberals re-elect themselves? Get into the real stuff for a change, blogers are doing a better job than these part time free-lancers.
