Situation normal...

Former provincial cabinet minister Ian Waddell wants to take another shot at public life. In an interview, Mr. Waddell confirmed he is once again planning on seeking the federal New Democrat nomination in Vancouver-Kingsway - where he ran and lost against Liberal David Emerson during the last election. Former Vancouver-Hastings provincial nomination hopeful Tony Kosovic will be competing against Mr. Waddell. And Mable Elmore told us she is also considering throwing her hat in the ring. Astute Public Eye readers will remember Ms. Elmore, an anti-war activist and British Columbia Federation of Labour regional political coordinator, kicked off a minor internal shitstorm when it was reported she told an online magazine that convincing union members to oppose the conflict in Iraq was difficult because of "vocal Zionists in our worksites." The nomination meeting for the riding has not yet been set but will likely be sometime in September or October. A version of this article was originally published in today's edition of 24 hours.

I like Ian Waddell, but he ran and lost to Emerson last time. Since then, Emerson's stature has grown, not the least becuase of his stance during the container driver's dispute with Vancouver Port trucking companies. I wonder if this is the right race for Ian Waddell, or if he might be better off running against the unliked and not much respected any more (as we speak) Hedy Fry in Vancouver Centre?

God save the NDP from a Mable Elmore candidacy. She's ultra-left, marxist. Her comments regarding "Zionists" and the "battles" she had against them are waaaaay over the top. She should not be approved as a candidate. She'll be an even bigger disaster then her friend Mary Woo Sims. For the love of God, she makes Mary Woo appear like a Centrist.

If I were David Emerson, I'm not sure who I'd be pulling for...

Ian Waddel has name recognition, but the fact that his backers are the Neil Moncton crowd makes his election chances almost nil. The funky (but useless) bunch took a winning campaign last time and flushed it down the toilet. Since then, every other politician they've supported has gone T.U. -- Raj Sihota (nomination, lost) Kelly Quinn (nomination, lost) and Tim Stevenson among them (Monctonites were crowing about Stevenson's victory as their handywork, but we all know how that turned out).

And then there's Mabel Elmore. Her extreme left-wing holier-than-thou politics would turn off all but the most ardent of Marxists. She has no record of service in the community, unless you count outing of 'zionists' in her workplace (yeah, that's real solidarity forever...) Under her, the NDP would probably lose ground in the riding, and I bet Emerson would be elected with 50+%.

still going on about the 'monckton funky crowd' huh?

jeez, give it a rest!

Still defending useless incompetents, huh?

Jeez, maybe you should give it a rest.

Slim, you have it all wrong, the crowd behind Raj Sihota and Kelly Quinn only support women candidates. According to their comments on this very website it would be the height of sexism to support a man for any kind of public office anywhere anytime. Using the logic that they put forward during the nomination battles earlier this year they couldn't possibly support Waddell. Good thing that Larry didn't run for mayor - they wouldn't have been able to vote for him without perpetuating male dominance in our political system. They are going to have to vote against Jim Green and Tim Stevenson in the upcoming civic. I guess that Raymond Louie's ethnicity will save him from their "principles"

Ha!!! LOL

I forgot about that.

You know, while this Moncton Crowd pretends to be moderate, they're really a bunch of looney left social misfits.

It's always, "monckton, monckton, monckton..."

That's because they are an out of touch elite. They need to grow up, get some REAL jobs, develop some credibility in the community, and then get involved in politics.

Why must New Democrats always feast on their own? Do you dippers see BC Libs doing that? The only other group I see doing that are federal Conservatives. Maybe it would help both your electoral fortunes to stop jerking each other around and start jerking the other guys around?

Exactly, I agree. Besides, these baby piglet Monctonites aren't worth feasting on anyway.

Posted by babaloo on August 4, 2005 08:13 PM

I disagree. The only way the NDP can do better is to chase these types as far away from the party as possible. They're arrogant, they're exclusive, and they drive people away with their political tactics.
