Will he stay or will he go now?

The vacillations of Lord David of Anderson continue. Those close to the Victoria MP say the former federal Liberal cabinet minister, who looked like he would be soon retiring, is now telling party members he'll be running in the next election. In fact, he's even saying kind words behind Prime Minister Paul Martin's back (we're good friends, he's more concerned about domestic issues, I'm going to be the environment minister again and so on). But that messaging doesn't seem to have deterred his constituency association from searching for a replacement. Our spies tell us the Liberal's national vice-president (British Columbia) Sharon Apsey recently met with Victoria mayor Alan Lowe to discuss succeeding Lord Anderson as the Liberal candidate for Victoria. Mr. Lowe is among several hopefuls said to be interested in the job.

The Liberals could also get a monkey to run. They should be able to win with a monkey.

Not so sure. Had Charley Beresford been the NDP candidate in the past election rather than 'mayor moonbeam', she might have beaten David Anderson.

Can the end finally be in sight for the never-ending career of former external affairs officer and one time Trudeaumania candidate, David Anderson? I can recall a time in the early 1970s when the betting was on that Anderson's ultimate career ambition was the Senate, since he had manouevred himself out of contention for a Cabinet post.

Here it is, a mere thirty years later, and we are still poised for the next move, still wondering if Victoria's outdoor wunderkid is going to be recognized and appreciated by the Eastern powerbrokers. And Anderson is still wondering himself. Some things never change, ... an appropriate condition in a way for the person representing the Greater Victoria area.
