Apparently, 400 words a day isn't enough for Province columnist Mike Smyth. Starting Monday, the Vancouver tabloid's legislative scribbler will be sharing his deep thoughts on provincial politics with CKNW listeners as the station's newest evening talk show host. You can catch him between seven and nine o'clock.
Is it just me or is this blog declining in quality ? It feels like an advertizing bulletin board for the editors media contacts !
No, I think it is ok to mention stuff like this maybe just start a new blog category ... I look forward to hearding how the ex-VIer duo does on CKNW on Monday!
While Geoff may have a point, I can't disagree with Newsman because, for a while now, I have felt that one of the reasons we have a somewhat substandard herd around here the fact that nobody keeps tabs on them (unless of course they are sports reporters).
And besides, if it is the editor's intention to develop a flypaper strategy to get the herd to pay attention I have no problem with that.
Hmmm. Not too sure how well he will do behind the mike as he is such a drama queen at times and most people are doing other things at that time slot.
As a political junkie though, I do enjoy finding this type of media info out, wherever I may find it, even here. Thanks Sean for the heads up on Moe and Norm appearing the old windbag NW last week. I tuned in and found it to be an enjoyable full hour of political discussion with Moe adding a much need balance.
I just wish David Schreck could find someone intelligent to debate over on Rafe's show. He's had the unfortunate luck of being stuck with rude inflammatory BC Lieberal apologists to debate over the past few years, including that current arrogant little bitch Eirin Airton.
John McComb was a good host in that time slot. I will miss him.
The young guy who fills in occasionaly (I think his name is Ted Field) would have been better than Mike Smyth.
Smyth is a tiresome cynic.
kaybertoss...classy remark. Must consider yourself a real devotee of the womens' liberation movement. Or is that just women who agree with you?
Kinda ironic really, only respecting women who agree with you. How very 1950's of you.
Kabertoss,
Thanks for your kind words. It is unfortunate that with all your experience in high level political debate and discourse, you have not managed to learn to separate the individual from the idea. While I doubt very much that you would ever take my advice, you may wish to consider what one of my favourite mentors (a very well-known former NDP Minister if that makes any difference) suggested to me: surround yourself with those whose ideas you don't understand or believe and you will expand your understanding of the world and other people.
Of course, I have my own moments of close-mindedness, but if you ask my friends and colleagues of all political stripes, they will tell you that I am always willing to learn from anyone.
Best of luck with everything and feel free to call me - I'd be more than pleased to meet for coffee.
Erin Airton
My sincere apologies go out to Erin Airton and anyone else that I may have offended with my thoughtless, coarse remarks. They were very un- appropriate to say the least.
You are quite correct that the free exchange of ideas does not benefit anyone by attacking the position at a personal level, even if one may strongly disagree with them.
I have just found the level of debate from the BC Liberal apologists taking on David over the years to be very frustrating to say the least.
However, this is still no excuse for my poor judgment and again would like to apologize to Erin and others whom I may have offended.
I think this is an unfortunate example of hitting the send button before one has given pause to think over what one has written down.
Sincerely,
Kaybertoss.
Smyth is such a sensationalist. The sad part is that it makes for higher blood pressure, hence his "success". I will take Palmer to the water closet anyday, but might utilize Smyth while in the process.
Apology accepted completely. I know how sometimes the passion of our beliefs can make us say things we regret. Trust me, I sometimes wince when I replay the Friday morning debates, as well.
Cheers,
Erin
Thanks Erin. :) I feel much better now. All the Best to you!
I had a listen to Mike interview Gordon Campbell and came away completely disappointed.
Considering Mike's style, I thought he was going to come out like a lion but rather was more like a meek little lamb. To me, it was like listening to a Liberal infomercial rather than a hard hitting interview.
For most of the hour interview, Gordo and his merry band of young Liberals who jammed the lines wile reading from their scripts completely owned Mike.
It was almost like he was completely intimidated by Gordo. No I'll answer the question before you go for break, said a dominating Campbell when asked to wait until after a break by Mike. Oh, OK then, replied a meek Mike. Whose show is it anyways?
But then again, I guess Mike had to stick to the pre-approved scripted questions and not upset the bosses at Corus or CanWest with any surprises. You wouldn't want to upset your bosses now Mike, after all they did donate huge sums of money to Gordon Campbell and his BC Liberal party.
mike does not have the reliable sources once
produced by a former writer.
if he continues to be a puppet after 3 months,
fire him.
in the meantime, the jurys still out.
nic.
