Don't worry! Satan isn't wearing ice skates

Burnaby-Douglas New Democrat MP Svend Robinson just can't seem to stay out of trouble. Insiders inform us Mr. Robinson been telling fellow party members he is contemplating seeking a provincial nomination in one of the Burnabies. Mr. Robinson decided not to run in the last federal election after admitting he stole a $50,000 ring from Federal Auction Service Inc. He is scheduled to appear in court this Friday on theft charges.

If there is a god, he will not let this happen. What an absolute disaster this would be. Go away Svend.

Well, there can't be a god. We have a convicted drunk driver as a Premier. Go figure. Why should what Svend did be of any consequence.

With some luck Svend will be convicted and sent to jail where he belongs.

I think Svend would make a fine candidate and an excellent future Solictor General.

OK, I cant keep a straight face any longer...bwaaahaahhaaahhaaahhaaaaahhaa!

And just what was Campbell's justification for taking the SUV out for a spin after getting blammered? On the other end of the spectrum, while rumours are abound, and the media will no doubt attempt to use Svend's incidents recently as a characterization of the BCNDP, at the end of the day, its doubtful he will run, as the party executive has to "vet" him. His upcoming pleading guilty to theft over $5000 would pretty much tank any chance of getting past that stage.

I don`t think Svend should run again in light of his legal problems, but I also don`t think that our premier should be premier as a result of his drunk rampage in Hawaii, and night in jail on pee-stained mattress.

Ahhh, the sweet smell of moral relativism. There must be New Democrats in the room.

Posted by John English on August 6, 2004 01:47 PM

It`s all relative in politics isn`t it? One has to wonder which crime is worse. One of the things that comes to mind would be how many human lives were risked by stealing a ring. It is still a crime, and the criminal must face the music, but I wonder how Campbell`s crime would have been washed away if he had killed a few people.

How can you compare Campbell to Svend? One has absolutely no compassion and apparently takes glee in kicking people when they are down. The other fights for all constituents to the nth degree, not just for the financial interest lobby. If you have eyes, ears or even a little grey matter you should see the difference.

Posted by rcranium on August 6, 2004 05:13 PM

Well Mr. Cranium, you just made my point for me. You've decided that because in your estimation Svend is a better person that he should be excused and forgiven for what he did and becuase you don't like the Premier, he shouldn't be excused or forgiven.

Both are examples of men made serious mistakes in judgement and owned up to those mistakes. Both were deeply embarassed and humiliated by the experience.

Posted by John English on August 7, 2004 08:36 AM

Campbell did not own up to his mistake. If he had, he would have resigned. Being a Premier of a province, one has to set some manner of example for the public. Getting sh**-faced and driving at 70 miles per hour is a very poor example of leadership, and I for one do not want a drunk as premier, regardless of whatever party he or she is in. Lying and alcoholism are a very bad combination. Svend Robinson made a very serious mistake for whatever reasons, and also set a bad example, and has probably finished his career in politics. Why should Campbell`s career in politics not be finished? I guess the public will have to finish it for him next May.

Posted by C. Parkhurst on August 7, 2004 02:11 PM

I did not say forgive or excuse Svend, just show him some compassion. (If you have not spilled it all on el Gordo.) Svend set a good example and stepped down, something that can hardly be said about the other politician. Amazing how quick the defenders of el Gordo proclaimed it was and is only a "misdemeanor" in Hawaii......

Posted by rcranium on August 7, 2004 05:24 PM

If Svends move has "probably finished his career in politics" then why are we attaching our comments to story about his intentions to seek a provincial NDP nomination?

Posted by John English on August 7, 2004 06:02 PM

Svend Robinson is a better man by far than Gordon Campbell. Why he took a ring is beyond me. In spite of this, I would vote for him, given the opportunity. Premier Campbell and his Cabinet are responsible for people dying in this province on a daily basis. They are responsible for very real suffering. The worst part of this is that they know it. I know of what I speak. The fact these deaths are not reported or even being kept track of does not mean they are not happening. People employed in the Health Ministry and in the Human Resources Ministry know what is reallly happening. Svend Robinson is worth ten times more than any Provincial Cabinet Minister or Gordon Campbell. This lapse on the part of Svend Robinson is forgivable but the deaths and the extreme suffering going on right now is not.
