Looks like the axe has fallen faster and harder than anyone at The New VI expected. Station staffers had thought personnel and programming changes wouldn't occur until September. But, today, the suits at the CHUM Ltd. mothership announced the euphemistic and permanent "reduction" of 29 full and part time positions, effective immediately - a move that will save the station $1.4 million annually. Those reductions include well-known columnist Norman Spector, former provincial New Democrat cabinet minister Moe Sihota and political specialist Pia Shandel.
In an interview, CHUM British Columbia vice-president Brad Phillips said, "Certainly we're not going to do anymore political talk shows. The shows that we were doing weren't drawing enough audience. There's some good people there who poured their heart into doing it everynight. But it wasn't delivering an audience. And we're in the business of getting people to watch our station." Translation: EnviroMental, RightOn, VILand Voices and Talk TV have all been cancelled.
Other news staff on the firing line: reporters Chee Kwan Ho and Tricia Maus, EnviroMental host Briony Penn, weekend anchor Klaudia Ceglarz, weekend sports specialist Darren Harbord and Nanaimo videographer Richard Tomborello. Specific programming changes, which will include an increased emphasis "on the station's daily morning show and evening news programs," are going to be announced tomorrow.
Norman Spector was about the only thing worth watching on the New VI!
It was nice to have a show where both sides of the political spectrum were represented and callers were allowed to make their point within reason without be cut off or shouted down, wonder if the right wing fanatics were responsible for this?
This is amazing. The only reason to watch VIland was for the balanced point counterpoint of VIland Voices and the public being able to "voice" an opinion. I guess I will delete the channel from the remote , again. Hopefully another station with some vision will pick up this "Voices" format. For all the fanfare about a "new" television station with a "new" vision for the Island and BC has been "Asperized" like all the other media. Tsk, tsk, tsk, such a shame.
Devastating news for Right On's four loyal viewers.
Since I live in the lower mainland and not on Vancouver Island, the only time I watched the VIsland channel was to see "Voices". Even though I can't stand Pia Shandel, I very much enjoyed the repartee between Moe and Norman. I will definitely miss the commnentary (if it's not picked up elsewhere - minus Pia, I hope).
This couldn't have anything to do with CHUM's current and earnest promise to the CRTC to spend $20 million on local programming if it would be allowed to buy Craig Media's television stations in Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Brandon, along with three specialty digital channels and the Toronto 1 station in Toronto -- could it?
Surely CHUM isn't repeating the same tactic it used in BC of promising to spend big on local programming to get the licence, then cutting back after a suitable interval for public amnesia, claiming that it's doing it because the stations have been performing "below expectations."
But that's exactly what Brad Phillips, vice-president of CHUM Television for BC, which owns The New VI, is saying in today's Asperpapers.
Call me a corporate media sceptic, but I'd hazard a guess that the BC cutbacks and the potential prairie and Toronto acquisitions are most definitely intertwingled.
Pity. Moe Sihota-Norm Spector provided a good balance to many complex issues. Makes me wonder how in the world VI determined of whom the audience was comprised.
RIP NewVI...I for one will not be watching anymore
Just goes to show that Private sector broadcasters make lost of promises for local content and original programming when it comes to getting the licence then they dump it! Sadly the regulator is powerless once the station is up and running. Also another argument why we need a public broadcaster who should be doing this type of programming, much like Studio2 on TFO. Sadly neither the CBC nor KNOW did this type of programming as well as well as the NewVI. I certainly won't be turning on VI any longer! I fear once CHUM gets its hands on CFAX these types of non-community base decisions could occur elsewhere!
sorry folks,
but for the record chum has [zamier] deep pockets.
if a sensationable comment falls on broad street, does anyone hear it?
keep rattleing folks, i,m already asking for more cheese.
best wishes ,,nic.
I will NEVER watch the New VI again. I am also horrified that they can not get their reporters names right. It is Trina Maus, not Tricia. And she was an amazing reporter. As well I will miss Moe and Norman.
Pitty that CHUM didn't divulge the highest ratings The New VI ever got were with VI Voices, Talk TV and Right On. It's quite nerving that EnviroMental wasn't given a fair shake - how did they expect to get an audience when they put it up against 'America's Most Wanted?'
The truth is out there.
