The phony war to determine who wins the provincial New Democrat nomination in Victoria-Hillside continues. A senior party member says former MLA Steve Orcherton, who will likely be running against Victoria city councillor Rob Flemming, has been swelling his voting ranks by recruiting Hospital Employees' Union members who are upset (aren't they always?) about the B.C. Federation of Labour's decision to backdown from plans to launch a general strike.
HEU members are not always mad. The things that do get them mad are when collective agreements are ripped up, wages are rolled back, and to top it all off, when the "government" brags that there are more $16 dollar an hour jobs than ever before, yet one of the "government`s" own policies is to create more $10 per hour jobs.
As a non-supporter of the NDP nothing would make me happier than Steve Orcherton and as many NDP retreads as possible seeking and winning provincial nominations.
I personally heard the President of the BCGEU describe the details of the HEU deal. The B.C. Fed did not make the decision to accept the deal. The decision was made by the provincial leaders of the HEU. That's for the record.
Well being a member of the NDP I hope people remember the word NEW in there. We have a NEW leader, and NEW energy, and the leadership race went the way it should have. Oh the look on some of Stevie O's supporters at the convention when he threw his support to Leonard Krog, and at least half of them walked over into Carol's camp. I know, ancient history.
I think that people in BC have had enough of the polarized left right politics in BC. And the direction of the New Democrats right now seems to be social responsibility balanced with fiscal reality. It seems that people in BC have an appetite for that "mushy middle" that Steve liked yammering on about during the leadership campaign.
And if the story is true, about Stevie O trying to woe HEU workers to vote for him as a protest against the BCFED... shame on Steve. Frankly, I think defeating Gordo and his band of misfits in May 2005, is more important than trying to tie tin cans onto the bumper of the party at a time when we don't really need it. It's not to say that new members aren't welcome in the party. But on the premise of the article published here?? I don't think it helps the NDP in Victoria Hillside.
Orcherton? Do we really need an old no-talent with a shady past and dirty style of politics? rob Flemming is a NEW face with solme NEW ideas and NEW way of doing things.
